Participants Not Pawns: Guidance on Consulting with Children and Young People on School Closures (and other significant changes)

This project ran during 2010.

Children in Scotland worked with the Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland to produce guidance for Local Authorities on Pupil Consultations under the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010.

The guidance set out the principles of meaningful and sensitive consultation with children and young people.

It explored a range of methods that local authorities might want to use when carrying out consultations with children and young people on proposed school closures or other significant changes to the running of a school.

The guidance also provided examples of good practice for consultation with children and young people, and tips to support local authorities in putting principles into practice.

The guidance was designed to be read alongside the relevant parts of the Scottish Government’s statutory guidance on the 2010 Act.
