Julian Burton

Julian Burton is a Children’s Views Service Officer at Children in Scotland. Taking up his role in April 2026, he supports young people to make their views heard in complex decisions about education and support services.

Julian grew up in western Canada and worked for several years as a primary teacher in international schools in China, Germany, and Egypt before returning to university to earn his PhD in Childhood Studies. His doctoral research focused on young people’s use of digital technology for community-building and social activism.

Alongside his work for Children in Scotland, Julian continues to work part-time as a freelance academic researcher and editor. He has also channelled his passion for using his tech skills to benefit others into building a social enterprise offering repairs of household electrical goods.

When he’s not working, you’ll often find him indulging his love of travelling to the most unique and remote destinations he can find – from spending six months in an Australian Outback ghost town to joining a photography expedition to Antarctica.
