Dear Prime Minister,
Children in Scotland has joined more than 150 organisations and young people in a call for the UK Government to reconsider proposals for a social media ban for under-16s.
In a letter published by the Scottish Youth Parliament, signatories say they support efforts to make online spaces safer for children and young people, but warn that restricting access to social media could drive under-16s towards less regulated and potentially riskier online environments.
Children in Scotland is among the organisations backing the call, alongside the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland, Together (Scotland), Forces Children Scotland and more than 150 young people from across the country. The letter argues that young people themselves must be part of any discussions about how online safety measures are designed and implemented.
They say there is a risk that a ban could limit young people’s access to information, news and opportunities to participate in public life. It points to concerns that restrictions could affect how young people engage with current affairs and democratic processes, particularly as they prepare to become future voters.
A key demand in the letter is for the UK Government to engage directly with children and young people before progressing any legislation.
The group is also calling for a formal children’s rights impact assessment to be carried out before any regulations are introduced.
