About this event

Identifying ways of fostering positive citizenship, resilient communities and effective
leadership are key policy concerns in Scotland, with education playing a significant role in the process. Becoming a responsible citizen is one of the four goals of Curriculum for Excellence, but despite this, no explicit definition of ‘responsible citizen’ is offered – nor is any specific pedagogic practice promoted.

This research-based seminar will explore the meaning of citizenship and consider the ways in which early learning and childcare settings can support children to become responsible citizens.

Key learning:

  • Exploring the concept of citizenship in early childhood
  • Looking at how the social and learning environment fosters acts of positive citizenship, inclusion and equity
  • Reflecting on own practice and exploring pedagogic practices, materials, resources and interactions to support the skills and dispositions associated with citizenship.
