Nursery to primary: easing transitions through play
As part of our organisational response to the COVID-19 virus, Children in Scotland has adapted our training and events programme to a digital webinar format for the foreseeable future.
We may be running some of our scheduled events as abbreviated webinar versions, while others have to be cancelled or postponed until face-to-face training is possible again. Please keep an eye on our website, social media channels and Eventbrite page for updates.

About this event
A key part of the drive to make transitions easier for children was Curriculum for Excellence’s proposal that more ‘nursery’-type learning through play should be practised in the early stages of primary.
As this is a significant departure from the norm for many schools in Scotland, this workshop will explore how this transformation can be achieved and the opportunities it presents.
- Adapting current settings to include more play whilst ensuring progression in learning
- The role of the teacher in supporting transitions
- Finding confidence to be more adventurous and try out a different way of working.
Kate Johnston trained at Moray House as a primary teacher and then returned latterly to train as a nursery teacher. Having been influenced in her practice by Froebel, the work being undertaken in Reggio Emilia and the writing of Tina Bruce, she is passionate about allowing children time to develop their social and communication skills while exploring their environment.
She has spoken at EIS AGMs on the necessity for highly qualified early years staff and has joined this campaign to highlight the issues of an early start for our children’s lives.
