Mindfulness and autism
As part of our organisational response to the COVID-19 virus, Children in Scotland has adapted our training and events programme to a digital webinar format for the foreseeable future.
We may be running some of our scheduled events as abbreviated webinar versions, while others have to be cancelled or postponed until face-to-face training is possible again. Please keep an eye on our website, social media channels and Eventbrite page for updates.

About this event
This training workshop will discuss how autism affects the way a child communicates, interacts with others, processes information and the impact of stress on all of these areas.
You will learn how to use Mindfulness based stress reduction techniques to help autistic children self-regulate their stress reaction and increase their impulse control.
- How stress impacts on a child’s thinking, emotional experience and behaviour
- How Mindfulness can help autistic children and why
- Practising a range of techniques and developing programmes for individual children and groups/classes.
Jan Montgomery is an experienced therapist who works across the lifespan. She is a qualified Life Coach, Play Therapist and Adult Psychotherapist. Jan specialises in working with trauma and has a passion for sharing her learning in an accessible and creative format.
Jan has worked in health and social care in various roles throughout her career. She is a qualified Play and Creative Arts Therapist, an Accredited Adult Psychotherapist and a qualified Coach. Jan has just completed a Certificate in Traumatic Stress with the Trauma Centre at Bessel van der Kolk’s Justice Resource Institute, Brookline, and is in the process of completing her EMDR qualification.
Jan worked with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in the voluntary sector for almost a decade. This was where she developed her interest in working with attachment and trauma. Jan moved from this area to working in foster care to support children and carers of traumatised children. Today, Jan works with adults with mental health challenges which prevents them from moving into employment.
Jan has been delivering training for a number of years. She enjoys taking complex subjects and making them accessible to everyone. She believes that theories are important but understanding how they apply in practice is essential if we are to offer best practice to those who use our services.
Jan loves learning new things. She enjoys being creative; embroidery and lapidary are just two of her favourite pastimes.
