This session will take an in-depth look at Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which sets out the right for children to be listened to and taken seriously. You will consider what this right means for local authorities in the context of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024. Children in Scotland will share our approach to embedding the views of children and young people into our processes, policy and practice. We will also share examples of how and why the participation of children and young people in decision-making is central to our values and practices.
Facilitators
Sophie joined Children in Scotland in July 2023 as a Policy, Projects and Participation Officer. Prior to this, she was a primary school teacher with a specific interest in child-centred provision for young people with additional support needs.
Before her career in teaching, Sophie completed a bachelor’s degree in Drama and Performance where she developed a research interest in young people’s access to the arts and other extra curricular activities in Scotland. During her studies, she worked at an after school club and facilitated workshops for children at a local youth theatre.
