    Meeting the needs of EAL learners in the mainstream classroom

    The number of learners with English as an additional language (EAL) in Scottish schools has increased by over 30% since 2013. There are now over 39,000 pupils in all phases of education which is nearly 6% of the school population. Schools in many areas now teach migrants from Europe as well as the established bilingual communities. Recent CfE literacy data (2016) suggests that there is still a large gap between the attainment of EAL learners and native English speakers at P4 and P7 which narrows but remains significant at S3.Read more
